The Marriott Edition brand is a boutique-style hotel Barcelona that is being designed with input from famed hotelier Ian Schrager. The Edition hotels in Barcelona, Mexico City and Bangkok have yet to be built, but the company has signed contracts to develop them in these cities.
This is part of a larger trend in the hotel world toward boutique-style hotels, with nearly every top hotel company from Starwood to Hyatt unveiling or expanding their boutique concepts. This is seen as a way of attracting the affluent and trend-setting guests who scorn the large cookie-cutter hotel chains. Schrager is widely credited with putting the boutique hotel concept on the map. Marriott has also announced an Autograph collection of independently owned hotels last year which would be joining the Marriott rewards and reservations program.
